Die Welt am Sonntag (abbreviation WamS , original spelling WELT AM SONNTAG ) is a German national Sunday newspaper of Axel Springer SE with headquarters in Berlin . The sold circulation was 350,924 copies in 2017, a decrease of 12.7 percent compared to 1998.
history
Founded Welt am Sonntag in August 1948 in Hamburg as a supplement to the daily newspaper Die Welt with its own editorial staff. Bernhard Menne became the first editor-in-chief . In 1953 it was taken over by the publisher Axel Springer . The editorial office was relocated from Hamburg to Berlin in 2001. In 2006 the editors of Welt am Sonntag were merged with the editors of Welt and Berliner Morgenpost as well as the online editors of the three newspapers.
The edition of Welt am Sonntag on December 1, 2013 was designed by the designer Karl Lagerfeld with his own photos, texts and color illustrations. Karl Lagerfeld titled the cover sheet with The essential thing in life is to reinvent yourself . 2014 was Mario Testino co-editor in chief, in October 2015 Jil Sander co-chief editor of the series Guest Editions for the Welt am Sonntag .
Welt am Sonntag compact
Based on the content of the WamS , a compact edition shortened to 64 pages appears under the title Welt am Sonntag Compact . It was founded in 2010 based on the example of Welt Kompakt in the more manageable tabloid newspaper format . The Sunday newspaper first appeared in North Rhine-Westphalia. From January 30, 2011, Welt am Sonntag Kompakt was also available in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. Welt am Sonntag Kompakt has been available throughout Germany since February 17, 2013 .
Edition
The rest of the world on Sunday was from the first quarter of 2011 together with the Welt am Sonntag compact expelled. Like most German newspapers , the two papers have lost circulation in recent years. The sold circulation fell from 401,766 copies in the first quarter of 1998 to 350,924 copies in the fourth quarter of 2017. A decrease of 12.7 percent. Since then, the circulation figures are no longer reported to the IVW .

Die Welt am Sonntag has the following departments: Germany, Politics, Foreign Policy, Economy, Culture, Sport, Life & Science and Style & Travel. In addition to its editorial headquarters in Berlin, the newspaper is represented by two regional editorial offices in Hamburg and North Rhine-Westphalia and an editorial office in Frankfurt am Main. Since January 2014, Stefan Aust of the publisher of the newspaper. In February 2017 Peter Huth became editor-in-chief of the newspaper. On March 1, 2019, he was replaced by Johannes Boie .
