European Newspaper Award
The European Newspaper Award is considered the largest European newspaper competition. The newspaper designer Norbert Küpper founded the competition in 1999 and also organizes it. The website of the competition says: "The competition is independent. It is financed exclusively through the entry fees. To ensure this independence, there are no sponsors."
Modalities
The competition aims to improve the exchange of information on the subject of newspaper design and conception within Europe and is intended to contribute to new, creative solutions in editorial design . An international jury made up of journalists, media scientists and graphic designers jointly assess the print editions of the submitted newspaper copies. In addition to a daily edition, a Saturday copy is also requested from daily newspapers. Journalists from a newspaper that participates in a certain category are excluded from judging in this category. PDF files have also been accepted since 2018 , as “many publishers [.] No longer have an archive for printed newspapers”. The entry fee was € 250 in 2018 and the awards are undoped.
The European Newspaper Congress ( ENC ) was also founded by Norbert Küpper and renamed the European Publishing Congress ( EPC ) in 2019 . The specialist media publisher Oberauer near Salzburg is also organizing the European Publishing Congress with Küpper . The European (Newspaper) Publishing Congress takes place annually and serves as a festive ceremony for the four main prizes and the Awards of Excellence , which were awarded in 18 categories in 2018. The concepts and design of the main award winners will be presented visually in lectures.
