history
The Dagblad De Limburger was created in 1996 from a merger of the Dagblad voor Noord-Limburg and De Limburger . The history, which was shaped by the merging of the forerunner newspapers, is also shown graphically on the right.
The Dagblad voor Noord-Limburg until the merger
The newspaper has two predecessors, which were renamed over time and then merged with each other. The former appeared for the first time on April 3, 1869 under the name Nieuw Venloosch Weekblad and was initially a weekly newspaper. On November 3, 1900, it became the Venloosche courant and from then on appeared twice a week. It last appeared on March 25, 1908 and then merged with the second forerunner. This first appeared on February 28, 1863 as Venloosch weekblad and was also initially a weekly newspaper. On October 1, 1898, it became the Venloosch nieuwsblad and from then on appeared twice, from September 15, 1903, three times a week. The last issue here was on March 31, 1908.
On April 2, 1908, the newspaper Nieuwe Venlosche courant emerged from the Venloosche courant and the Venloosch nieuwsblad , which initially appeared three times a week and became a daily newspaper on May 2, 1912. It was last published on November 4, 1944. Since the newspaper continued to appear after 1942 during the German occupation in World War II , it was subject to the provisional publication ban for such cases. From April 18, 1945, the Dagblad voor Noord-Limburg appeared as the successor to the last edition on December 30, 1995 and the subsequent merger with De Limburger to form Dagblad De Limburger .
De Limburger until the merger
Like Dagblad voor Noord-Limburg, De Limburger has two predecessors that were renamed over time and then merged with each other. Its history is somewhat older than that of Dagblad voor Noord-Limburg , as the oldest forerunner newspaper, Nieuwsblad van de stad en het district Roermond , appeared on January 5, 1856. This became Maas-en Roerbode on March 22nd of that year and appeared under this name until 1904, from then on as De nieuwe koerier . The ban on publication would have applied here too, since De nieuwe koerier was still published after 1942, but on January 15, 1944, there was a return to the old name Maas-en Roerbode , under which the newspaper appeared until 1971 and then a merger with De Nieuwe Limburger received.
Its oldest forerunner was Veritas, first published in 1935 : kathiek 14-daagsch blad voor Maastricht . It appeared fortnightly. During the German occupation in 1941 there was an interim publication stop , but on September 25, 1944 it appeared again as the successor to the Mededeelingen van den Nederlandschen Orde-dienst . Post-war successors were then the Gazet van Limburg (1945–1955) and De Nieuwe Limburger (1955-1971) . The latter and the Maas en Roerbode merged in 1971 to form De Limburger , which then merged again in 1996 with the Dagblad voor Noord-Limburg to form Dagblad De Limburger .
Since the merger
In 2000, the newspaper was taken over by " De Telegraaf Holding ", which had already acquired its local competitor Limburgs Dagblad in 1972 and merged the two newspapers on January 1, 2001 in the new subsidiary "Media groep Limburg".
In April 2006 the British media investment company "Mecom" acquired the "Media groep Limburg" from "De Telegraaf Holding". On August 1st of the same year, Dagblad De Limburger and Limburgs Dagblad , Huub Paulissen, received a joint editor-in-chief for the first time.
