Sittard ( Limburgish Zitterd ) is a town in the southern part of the Dutch province of Limburg, directly on the German border near Selfkant . It had 36,015 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2018) and has been part of the municipality of Sittard-Geleen since 2001 , which has 92,606 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019) on an area of ​​80.58  km² .

history

Sittard, center

The place was created in Carolingian times between 700 and 1000. Around 1200 it belonged to the Duchy of Limburg and received city ​​rights in 1243 . In 1400 Sittard was sold together with the towns of Born and Susteren for 70,000 gold guilders to the Duchy of Jülich , where it remained until the French invaded in 1794.

In 1543, during the Third War of the Geldrian Succession , the Habsburg troops of Mary of Hungary (1505–1558), general governor of the Netherlands since 1531 , suffered a defeat in the Battle of Sittard on Easter Sunday against the troops of William V (1516–1592), who were allied with France . from Jülich-Kleve-Berg . In 1677 the city was almost completely destroyed in the war waged by the French King Louis XIV against the United Provinces of the Netherlands.

In 1794, Sittard (like the whole of the Left Bank of the Rhine ) was conquered by French revolutionary troops; the French era began. In 1798 Sittard became the canton capital ( Chef-lieu ) in the Département de la Roer of the French Republic. At the end of the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon, Sittard came to the Kingdom of the United Netherlands in 1815 (in the Congress of Vienna ) , became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Belgium from 1830 to 1839 and has been part of the Netherlands since 1839 . From May 1940 to the end of 1944, the Netherlands was occupied by Wehrmacht troops.

Sports

The city's best-known club is the football club and current first division club Fortuna Sittard , which plays its games in the Fortuna Sittard Stadium . In April 2018, the club rose to the Dutch Eredivisie (top division).
