The Basilica of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus ( Dutch Basiliek van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van het Heilig Hart ) is a Roman Catholic church in Sittard in the Dutch province of Limburg . It stands on the Old Market between the Dominican and Ursuline monasteries in the historic city center. The pilgrimage church belonging to the diocese of Roermond bears the title of a minor basilica and is protected as a Rijksmonument . It is administered by the Arch Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, founded in 1867.

history

The church was built for the purpose of worshiping the Sacred Heart of Jesus , for which the Arch-Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart was founded in Sittard in 1867 . The church was to replace the previously used small chapel of the neighboring Ursuline monastery. The construction was made possible by donations from all over the Netherlands. The foundation stone was laid on June 2, 1875. This marble stone comes from the Catacomb of Calixtus in Rome and was made by Pope Pius IX. donated. Construction was completed in 1877, after which Joannes Paredis consecrated the church as Bishop of Roermond on July 5, 1879 . In 1883 it was the first church in the Netherlands by Pope Leo XIII. raised to the minor basilica.

architecture

The architect Johannes Kayser was commissioned to design the church in 1873 . Kayser, a student of Pierre Cuypers , designed the church in a neo-Gothic style, very similar to that of his teacher, especially recognizable when compared to the Posthoornkerk in Amsterdam and the Munsterkerk in Roermond. Later, to expand the pilgrimage complex , Kayser also designed the Mariapark opposite the basilica, built in 1892 , a square cloister with 14 stations of the cross , which was based on the north German brick Gothic that had become typical for him .

The building has the shape of a cross basilica . The interior design is largely derived from the Laon Cathedral in France, an early Gothic building with late Romanesque influences. For better use of space, galleries were built over the side aisles , following the example of Laon . Most of the walls of the church are decorated with hundreds of glazed votive tablets . Instead of a west tower, the church has a large octagonal crossing tower with corner turrets, while the facade is flanked by polygonal stair towers. The choir has a handling with a chapel wreath , modeled on the Reims Cathedral . The altars in the choir chapels are dedicated to Saints Angela , Augustine , Joseph , Aloysius and Ursula .

Furnishing

The condition of the church as it was built remained largely authentic. The high altar was donated by Pastor J. Masker, the gilded tabernacle comes from Aachen goldsmith August Witte , the six meter high wooden triumphal cross (1879) from Dean FX Rutten, it symbolizes the tree of life . The five figural choir windows refer to Mary's work. The windows in the transverse arms each show eight male and female saints from the Old Testament with Marian references. Other essential pieces of equipment are the pulpit from 1882, the communion bench from 1880 and the six chandeliers.
