from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Czepelak ( Karel Čepelák in Czech ; born January 29, 1852 in Leitmeritz , Kingdom of Bohemia; † January 26, 1893 ibid) was a Bohemian lawyer and painter.

Czepelak studied in Prague, was a corps student of a German beating association, and received his doctorate in 1879. jur. He joined a relative's law firm in Leitmeritz.

From 1880 he fell ill with rheumatoid arthritis, which over the years made him a nursing case. During this time he devoted himself to drawing and painting in addition to columnist works for the "Teplitz-Schönauer Anzeiger" (e.g. a multi-part series on "Altteplitz" in 1891 under the title "Einst und Jetzt"). He was praised as a master of the satirical and humorous genre, his drawings "found wide distribution".

In May 1887 Czepelak was one of the interlocutors of the Filipino freedom fighter Jose Rizal, who visited his teacher and mentor Ferdinand Blumentritt in Leitmeritz on a trip to Europe .

Its role in the "city war" between Aussig, Leitmeritz and Teplitz is curious. On the occasion of a district reform, Aussig tried to move the district court located in Leitmeritz to Aussig. This led to a public controversy fueled by the local newspapers, in which Teplitz voted for Leitmeritz. The most passionate plea was written from his sick room in Carl Czepelak, which the Aussig spokesmen took very badly. He was accused of an immoral lifestyle and called for a boycott of Leitmeritz beer. However, the court stayed in Leitmeritz.
