Pilgrimage church

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A pilgrimage church is usually the destination of a pilgrimage and forms a place of pilgrimage . Pilgrimage churches can also be located along pilgrimage routes , such as the Way of St. James . Pilgrimage churches are originally often located next to the graves of saints or have relics of those who are venerated in the church. These can be bones, items of clothing or other memorabilia, in isolated cases also suspected splinters of Jesus' cross , parts of the crown of thorns , nails of the cross and the like. Pilgrimage churches were also built in places where miracles are said to have happened. Since modern times, these have often been Marian shrines , which often have particularly venerated images of grace .
