The Roman Catholic pilgrimage church Maria Schutz am Bründl , also called Bründlkirche , is a listed building in Bad Leonfelden in the Mühlviertel . The pilgrimage church consecrated to the Mother of God Maria is located at the western exit of the city on the road to the Spielau district and faces northeast. The church was built in 1691 and expanded to its present size in 1791. Since 1958 this church has been the only Pax-Christi church in the Mühlviertel.

Founding legend and building history

In 1686 a sick carpenter was healed by the water from the spring that is now at the back of the high altar of the pilgrimage church. The carpenter set up a wooden cross next to the spring as a thank you. Due to the influx of people seeking healing, a chapel was built in 1691 with an image of Mary from Mariazell and the name Our Lady Chapel near Bründl , and a pit for bathing in the healing water was excavated.

In 1759 the chapel was expanded under Pastor Malachias Schopper. With the inauguration in 1761, the name was changed to Maria Schutz bei Bründl Chapel and a protective mantle Madonna was erected. From 1767 a separate pastor was responsible for the chapel and mass was read every day. The further increase in the number of visitors led to the start of a new church building in 1778, which was interrupted for three years in 1789 and only continued after the closure of St. Joseph's Church (hospital chapel). The inauguration took place in 1792.

In 1875 a fire damaged the left side of the high altar and in 1886 the church was renovated. In 1890 two side altars with the altarpieces of St. Joachim and Anna with Maria were erected. Between 1905 and 1907 the tower was raised and the new Sacred Heart statue was consecrated. The two bells, consecrated in 1929, had to be removed for war purposes in 1941. In 1946 the church received a bell again and in 1958 it was consecrated as the Pax Christi church in the Mühlviertel. In 1960 two more bells were purchased. Since 1975 the Bründlkirche has served as a church for the expellees of the city and parish of Hohenfurth , in this context the Hohenfurth Madonna picture was consecrated. In 1986 there was a total renovation with an expansion of the spring version.

The church is a single structure with a baroque high altar from 1790, built by Johann Lanit from Wels. The altar contains the statue of grace Maria Schutz and other figures of saints. The baroque wall paintings by Andreas Kitzberger from 1792 show scenes from the life of Mary. The rococo pulpit comes from Simon Mayrhofer from Oberneukirchen and was built in 1791. The stained glass windows from 1906 are by Penner and Schürer. The neo-baroque side altars were built by Josef Kepplinger in 1893 and show Mary with her parents.

In 1904 the church received an organ built by Leopold Breinbauer , Ottensheim . The organ's Rückpositiv comes from Lorenz Franz Richter from Freistadt (1766). The choir stalls and the oratory windows were taken over from the hospital church, the marble fountain basin from the 18th century comes from Wilhering Abbey. There are also numerous individual works such as the statue of Saint Leonhard acquired in 1960.
