The pilgrimage church Heiligengrab , a branch church of the Bleiburg parish , is visible from afar on a hill near Schilterndorf in the Bleiburg community . It is one of the few new baroque church buildings in Carinthia. The church is the destination of the Jauntaler Dreiber run.

history

Already in 1688 Valvasor mentioned a small pilgrimage church on this viewing hill. After the city fire of 1711, the citizens vowed to build a larger church. However, some ecclesiastical circles opposed the construction in order to avoid competition for other places of pilgrimage. Therefore, the Counts of Thurn-Valsassina, the Lippitzbach trades and the citizens of Bleiburg could only build the church between 1761 and 1772. In 1772 it was consecrated by the Bishop of Ljubljana . A complete restoration took place from 1987 to 1991. In 2003 restorer Campidell restored all the frescoes in the nave.

Building description

The church was built on a cross-shaped plan. The two towers are crowned by onion helmets, the nave is covered by a gable roof. To the nave an extended to a yoke Choir with two symmetrical lateral bands includes konchenartig on. A suspended dome , which cannot be read from the outside, rises above the crossing and is crowned by a six-sided lantern with an onion helmet. The nave and the two-tower facade are structured by pilaster strips . The west portal is accentuated by fighters and a keystone , above which the Entombment of Christ is painted in a tondo .

Inside, the hanging dome rises above mighty pillars. To the north and south of the dome there are two conches and a deep choir apse to the east. To the south of the choir is the sacristy , above it on both sides of the choir oratorios . The barrel-vaulted nave is divided on the walls by two blind arches. The triaxial, cross -arched gallery balustrade slightly protrudes in the middle. The entire church interior makes a light-flooded impression through the large windows.

Murals

The walls and ceilings are painted, the spaces between the scenes are filled with ornamental paintings. According to a cartouche, Johann Fran is the master of the wall paintings in the dome. Kleinneger. A chronogram under the coat of arms of Count Thurn provides information about the year it was built in 1765. The choir and nave were not painted in a similar style until 1914 by Oswald Bierti.

Facility

On the baroque high altar from 1765 there is a crucifixion group with Mary and John. The holy grave is located under the cafeteria and is closed with a baroque gate. God the Father and the Holy Spirit float in the altarpiece . A sacrificial pelican forms the end of the tabernacle .

The two side altars were created around 1770, the altar leaves of which are attributed to Johann Andreas Strauss. The altar panel of the left altar shows Saint Notburga , flanked by the carved figures of Saints Helena and Maria Magdalena . Saint Isidore can be seen on the right altar panel , surrounded by the carved figures of Saints Antonius and Wendelin .

The pulpit dates from the third quarter of the 18th century. The figures of the four evangelists sit on the basket beads . The end of the sound cover is the statue of the risen Christ standing on a bundle of clouds. Three putti heads and four sheep can be seen at his feet. On the underside of the sound cover, a dove of the Holy Spirit hovers in front of a halo. The pulpit as well as the sculptures on the side altars could be works by Michael Zill.

A large votive picture marked 1744 shows a pilgrimage to the old church and refers to the vow to build the church.
