The Iranian Railway Network (2020)

The Railway Company of the Islamic Republic of Iran ( Persian شركت راه‌آهن جمهوری اسلامی ایران Scherikat-e Rah Ahan-e Djomhouri-e Eslami Iran ) (RAI) is a state-owned company that owns and operates the railway network in Iran .

organization

The company is under the supervision of the Ministry of Roads and Transport. The railway infrastructure is operated by the company, whereas the railway traffic has been carried out by two separate subsidiaries since 1996:

In addition, there are a number of other railway companies in Iran that are mainly organized under private law and that do not belong to IRIR and that offer rail transport.

traffic

In 2011, the Iranian railways carried 29 million passengers with 21 billion passenger kilometers , about a quarter of which was carried out by the IRIR. Long-distance passenger transport connections are usually operated by private providers. Even the freight has been privatized to a large extent.

network

The network is constantly being expanded, including by closing the gap to Pakistan in 2009 ( Qom – Zahedan railway line ) and by adding new cross-border routes to Turkmenistan (opened in 2014) and Afghanistan (under construction).

history

The first major rail project in Iran was the Trans-Iranian Railway , which was built from the end of the 1920s under Reza Shah as a north-south route between the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea and was put into operation in 1938. The expansion of the network continued until 1979, then slowed down initially due to the revolution and the war against Iraq, and the expansion of the network has been pushed forward again since the early 1990s.

During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic , RAI took extensive measures to maintain operations - with a reduced timetable.
