The Qom – Zahedan railway in Iran is part of the rail link between the European railway network and that of the Indian subcontinent . The rail infrastructure is owned by the Iranian State Railways RAI .
Geographical location
The railway line connects to the Trans-Iranian Railway in Qom , which in turn provides connections to Turkey and Azerbaijan . The Zahedan – Quetta railway line to Pakistan begins at its eastern terminus, Zahedan . In Bafq it crosses the north-south railway .
Technical parameters
The route is approximately 1230 km. It is mainly single-track and is operated with diesel traction. It was built in the standard gauge used as standard in Iran . For the subsequent traffic east of the Zahedan terminus in the direction of Pakistan, this requires reloading of the transported goods, since the Zahedan – Quetta railway was built in the broad gauge of 1676 mm commonly used in Pakistan . The joint freight yard in Zahedan is set up accordingly for reloading. There is no gauge change system between the two routes. Travelers have to change trains. The two railway lines use two train stations located in different places in the city for passenger traffic .
history
The construction of the line has been advanced in numerous stages since the 1940s. By the time the Islamic Revolution in 1979 brought rail projects to a standstill, the line had reached Kerman in 1977 and Isfahan - still via Ardakan - in 1979. Then there was a long pause. In 1997, the Badrud - Sistan section, a shortened connection for Isfahan, was put into operation in 2003 and on June 17, 2009, the last two sections to Zahedan.
traffic
There has been a continuous express train from Tehran to Zahedan since 2011 . The travel time is a little over 24 hours.
Follow-up projects
In Zahedan, the connection of a Zahedan – Mashhad railway line (in planning) and a Zahedan – Tschahbahar railway line , 550 km, single-track, under construction, is planned.
