Nain , also Na'in ( Persian نایین Nāʾīn ), is an oasis city in central Iran with about 26,500 inhabitants and is located in the inner-Iranian high plateau at an altitude of 1545 m in the Isfahan province. It is believed that Nā'in was founded as early as the Sassanid period .

Cityscape

The city is a center of carpet manufacturing and is famous for the Nā'in carpets produced there . Nain used to be famous for its finely woven coats, so-called abaya . In earlier times, the bazaar was a well-known point of contact for bazaar and customers across the region . Today there is hardly any trade here. The cone-shaped structures at the entrance to the bazaar are water reservoirs, which are cooled by the wind towers that stand next to them.

The Friday Mosque ( Masjed-e Jom´e ) is the oldest surviving mosque in the Persian region and the most important building in the city. The mosque dates from the Abbasid period in its beginnings . It only has one minaret. Its first, barely recognizable building is dated to the beginning of the 9th century, the second construction phase around 960. The mosque survived the times almost undamaged and still shows its original face today. Under the rectangular courtyard there is a mighty vaulted cellar as a place of prayer. Like the old Friday mosque in Isfahan, the basement is illuminated by alabaster slab stones from the ceiling. It is enclosed by high colonnades. The slightly elevated central arch on each of the four courtyard sides anticipates the Persian four-iwan architectural concept .

The calligraphic stucco friezes over the window niches and pointed arches are among the oldest that are still preserved in Persia. The minbar by the mihrab reveals beautiful wood carving from the 14th century. There are other mosques in Nain such as the Masjed-e Emamzadeh and tomb.

Opposite the Friday Mosque is a magnificent merchant's house, which today houses an anthropological museum. There are several exhibition rooms in the two-story arcades around the lower courtyard.

In Mohamadi, two kilometers east of the city lies the old and completely rammed built fortress Narin Qala . There are also seven Hosseiniyes (places of worship for Imam Husain ) in the city district.

traffic

Nain is on the desert road between Kashan and Yazd , where there are also bus connections. The city is also on the Qom – Zahedan railway , the southern east-west rail link of Iran.
