The Conrad Stein Verlag is a book publishing company with a focus on outdoor literature and travel.

history

The publishing house was founded in 1980 by Conrad Stein (March 4, 1942– February 14, 2020) in Kiel . The publisher's first book - Australien-Handbuch - and the books of the first years of publishing were aimed primarily at individual tourists . 1990 began with the series "OutdoorHandschriften", which initially dealt with general outdoor topics such as " Edible Wild Plants" or "Map & Compass", the focus of the publishing house on the subject of nature sports travel. A little later, the series was expanded to include canoeing and hiking guides who, instead of describing an entire region, each describe only one long-distance hiking trail or one cycle or canoe route. The aim of the publishing house was to bring out small and easy books for hikers and other active vacationers.

In 1996 the publisher published its first book on the Camino de Santiago . In the following years the range of pilgrimage routes was expanded. The publisher now has around 45 titles on various pilgrimage routes in Germany and Europe.

In 2002 Conrad Stein retired and handed the publishing house over to his colleague Marie-Luise Großelohmann. In the course of the conversion to a GmbH - in which Conrad Stein is still involved - the publishing house was relocated from Kiel to Welver (Westphalia).

Publishing program

The Conrad Stein Verlag program includes around 350 titles (as of 2014). Every year there are around 25 new publications and 40 new editions in a total of seven different series.

In the main series of the publishing house “The way is the goal” guides for long-distance hiking and pilgrimage routes as well as canoe, bike or mobile home routes are published. Another focus is the series “Basic knowledge for outdoors”, which aims to convey general knowledge on outdoor topics such as fishing , trekking or geocaching . Under the name “Fernwehschmöker”, the publisher publishes reports on extraordinary journeys.

At the end of the 1990s, the "Fremdsprach" series was started, which is intended to provide an entertaining introduction to the special features of different languages. In 2008 the series “Cruise” started, in which manuals for cruise routes appear. The idea here is that travelers should get along with one travel guide for all cities or islands they visit. In 2010 the first book in the series “Neighborhoods” was published, which deals in a humorous way with the customs and idiosyncrasies of different European nations.

In spring 2014, the publishing program was expanded to include another new series. The hiking guides in the “Outdoor Regional” series introduce up to 30 shorter day and weekend hikes in a region (e.g. Lake Garda, Swabian Alb, Hamburg) and a. Tips for hikers with children, buggies and dogs.

Design of the books

With regard to the target group, the publisher attaches great importance to the fact that its books are small, light and handy on the one hand, but also durable on the other. The publisher's trademark are the predominantly bright yellow envelopes with the imprint "Outdoor".

Climate-neutral printing

Conrad Stein Verlag was the first book publisher in Germany to produce and transport its books in a climate-neutral way . In accordance with the CO 2 emissions generated during printing and transport, emission reduction certificates from climate protection projects are purchased for each book and shut down and deleted in accordance with the criteria of the Kyoto Protocol .
