Bandar-e Imam Khomeini ( Persian بندر امام خميني) is a port city in Iran in the province of Chuzestan on the Persian Gulf . Imam Khomeini port is a major seaport in the country.
History and geography
Bandar-e Imam Khomeini has about 72,000 inhabitants, the previous name was Bandar-e Shahpur . Until the First Gulf War between Iran and Iraq, this was the country's most important oil port.
The city is named after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini , the leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran who died in 1989 . The city has a train station on a branch of the Trans-Iranian Railway .
