The Zahedan – Tschahbahar railway is a new line under construction in Iran .
Geographical location
The railway line is to connect the port of Tschahbahar , located on the Indian Ocean , to the country's railway network via Zahedan . The port is the only deep-water port in Iran that has direct access to the Indian Ocean without ships having to pass through the narrow part of the Strait of Hormuz . The railway is also of strategic military importance for Iran . For India , this route represents a route in freight traffic to get a water / land connection to Russia bypassing Pakistan . India is therefore contributing financially to the construction of the railway line.
Technical parameters
The line will be 750 kilometers long and single-track in the standard gauge used in Iran . The maximum gradient will be 15 ‰ with a maximum curve radius of 1000 meters. The line is designed for a maximum speed of 120 km / h for passenger trains and 90 km / h for freight trains . The plan is to transport 1.3 million tons of goods in the first year of operation, which is to be increased to 35 million tons within 20 years.
Expansion planning
At a later date, the route from Zahedan is to be extended about 800 kilometers north via Mashhad to Seraqs on the border with Turkmenistan . This will create a north-south connection along the Iranian eastern border, which will give the Central Asian inland states the shortest possible access to a seaport. A branch to Afghanistan is planned near Saranj to facilitate the trade in goods.
