Saranj ( Pashto / Dari :زرنج, DMG Zaranǧ ; Engl .: Zaranj ) is the capital of the Afghan province of Nimrus . The city is on the border with Iran. The population of the city was (as of 2015) around 50,000. The city is an important trading center.

The Zaranj Airport is located on the northeastern outskirts.

Historic Saranj was the capital of the Saffarids and was on the Silk Road . A wide road led to Herat and Kandahar .

Saranj was controlled by the Taliban from around 1995 to 2001 . On August 6, 2021, Saranj was captured for the second time by the Taliban. After the withdrawal of NATO troops in 2021, Saranj was the first provincial capital to be captured by the Taliban. The government troops left the city to the Taliban without a fight.
