Tschahbahar ( Persian چاه‌بهار, DMG Čāhbahār ), also Tschabahar (چابهار, DMG Čābahār ), is a port city on the Gulf of Oman in Iran .

geography

The city is located in the province of Sistan and Balochistan and has about 200,000 inhabitants.

history

On December 15, 2010, the day of the Ashura festival, a suicide bomber blew himself up in front of the Imam Husain mosque . 15 people died (39 according to other sources) and at least 50 were injured. The Jundollah group committed to the act, citing the execution of their former leader Abdolmalek Rigi in June 2010 as the reason .

capacity

The quay is 3 kilometers long and offers berths for 15 ships with a water depth of 16.5 m. The port has a capacity of 740,000 TEU and an annual turnover of 15 million tons . The 4000 m² passenger terminal can handle 600 passengers at the same time.

connection

The port is the only deep-water port in Iran and the most important in the region. It has natural deep water basins that allow large ships to dock here. On the land side, however, the port is currently only connected by road. There is a project of a rail link to Zahedan ( Zahedan – Tschahbahar line ) and thus to the network of the Iranian State Railways (RAI).

meaning

In terms of hinterland traffic and military importance, the port competes with the port of Gwadar in Pakistan : India is interested in the port of Tschahbahar in order to be able to deal with Pakistan in traffic with Afghanistan , as well as in sea and land traffic with Europe . This connection via Iran and Azerbaijan to Northern Europe is much shorter than the pure sea transport through the Suez Canal and the Strait of Gibraltar .

In Tschahbahar, in connection with its port, there is a free trade zone , which is also Iran's most economically important gateway to the Indian Ocean .

After the conclusion of an agreement between Iran and India on the port in December 2018, a joint venture between the Indian companies Jawaharlal Nerhu Port Trust and Deendayal Port Trust received the license to operate the port.
