Bafq ( Persian بافق, DMG Bāfq , also Bafgh ) is a small oasis town in the central Iranian province of Yazd .
geography
The place is on the southern edge of the Dascht-e Kavir . According to a calculation from 2012, it has about 34,000 inhabitants and is 120 km southeast of the city of Yazd . The city obtained water from qanats and wells, which made agriculture possible. Wheat, barley and palm groves are grown.
history
Historically, the place was a small oasis town. In the 16th century the poet Kamal ad-Din (or Shams ad-Din Mohammad), known as Vahschi Bafqi, lived here .
economy
In addition to agriculture, Bafq is known for its weaving products. Since the end of the 19th century, large iron ore deposits were discovered 12 km north of the city near Choghart, which can be extracted here in opencast mining, the city has developed into a center of the iron ore and steel industry.
traffic
Bafq is an important hub in the Iranian railway network . This is where the Qom – Zahedan railway , the south-east-west railway connection of Iran, and the north-south railway from Mashhad to Bandar Abbas cross .
