St. Christophorus

The Roman Catholic pilgrimage church Maria Dornach is located 1166 meters above sea level in Mitteldorf in the municipality of Großkirchheim and is a branch of the parish Sagritz . In 1365 a church in Mitteldorf was first mentioned as "Beata Maria an der Schütt" . This church was probably destroyed by a landslide. The current church was consecrated in 1491 by Bishop Konrad von Belluno. In 1551 a fire damaged the church.

Building description

The church is a medium-sized, late Gothic building from the 15th century. The five-storey tower with ogival sound windows is crowned by an onion helmet. On the south wall of the nave, narrow, high double lancet windows with fish bubble tracery have been preserved. The baroque Loretto Chapel was added to the north side in 1728 . A fresco of St. Christopher has been preserved on the south wall . Coffee cornices run around the whole building . The nave and the tower are decorated with cast stones with simple ornamentation. The late Gothic, profiled south portal was given a new lintel . The ogival west portal leads into the vestibule.

In the single-nave, three-bay nave, a ribbed vault rises above strong, profiled wall pillars with semicircular templates. The original painting with half-figure saints has been preserved on the round keystones . In the west yoke there is a two-story wooden music gallery. The lower gallery parapet was painted in the first half of the 19th century with scenes from the life of the Virgin in Gothic style. The organ dates from 1740. Two baroque doors with pilaster frames and straight lintels lead from the north wall of the nave into the Loretto Chapel. A retracted, pointed arched and profiled triumphal arch connects the nave with the choir. In the choir, a ribbed vault rests on semicircular templates. On the south wall of the choir there is a late Gothic sacrament niche with a keel arch .

The Nazarene wall paintings in the choir and nave were made around 1900. You can see candelabra and angels with instruments of passion in the choir vault and depictions of saints in the vaulted areas of the nave. The wall painting with the punishments of hell on the north wall of the nave dates from the 18th century. Above it, God the Father is shown with bundles of bits. On the west wall there is a baroque mural depicting adoration .

The high altar with sacrificial doors and five-axis, open column structure was donated by the Jenner family in 1754. It hides a clothed Madonna under a fabric canopy. The top picture shows God the Father, flanked by angel figures and the saints Florian and Barbara . The late baroque console figures of Saints Michael , Ulrich , Brictius and Domitian of Carinthia are in the choir . The two side altars were made in the late 17th century. The one on the left shows the crucifixion on the altar and bears the figures of John the Baptist and Saint Vitus in the top . The image of the right altar shows the saints of the plague, Sebastian and Rochus . The top figures are the saints George and Florian. A clothed figure of Mary from the first half of the 14th century stands on the altar hall , under whose clothing traces of fire from 1551 are visible. The pulpit from the first quarter of the 18th century shows the painted representation of the four evangelists on the parapets . A crucifixion group with slaughterers and Mary and John from the mid-18th century is attached to the triumphal arch wall. The console figures of Saints Mary , Veronica , Maria Magdalena , Peter , Hieronymus , Agatha , Augustine and the Man of Sorrows are placed on the walls of the nave . The three wise men and late baroque angels are located above the windows .

The Loretto Chapel is furnished with décor typical of the 1930s. The donor of the house of prayer in Döllach, the Virgin Mary Schober, is buried at the lower entrance to the chapel.
