The Roman Catholic parish church of Sagritz in the community of Großkirchheim is consecrated to St. George . In front of the church there is a larger than life carved crucifix and a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows from the 18th century.

history

The church was first mentioned in a document in 1271. In 1273 it was raised to the status of provost. The late Gothic building, consecrated in 1516 by Bishop Berthold von Chiemsee , was already badly dilapidated during a visit in 1615. In 1769–1779, the church tower was largely rebuilt, including the church tower that already existed in 1552 and was described as inclined in 1676. The Prince-Bishop of Lavant Graf Schrattenberg consecrated the new building in 1782. The parish of Sagritz was also subordinate to the current parishes of Heiligenblut and Mörtschach with Rettenbach until 1783 .

Building description

The large late baroque church consists of a hall and a choir that is bent to its axis and closed on three sides. On the nave and choir there are small arched windows above the high rectangular windows, suggesting a mezzanine. The three-storey west facade with a window axis on both sides of the tower is designed by a corrugated gable and a giant pilaster . The two memorial plaques honor Bishop Kahn and the priest Anton Granig, who was executed by the National Socialists in 1945 . The five-storey, Gothic entrance tower has pointed arch sound windows and is crowned by a pointed gable helmet. A pointed arch portal leads into the entrance hall on the tower ground floor with a ribbed vault over four corner pillars. The wall paintings in the vestibule are a testimony to the Möll Valley, which was Protestant in the 16th century . The selection of Bible verses on the banners of the evangelists in the vault emphasizes the sole saving faith in Christ. On the northern wall of the shield, the crucifixion, the resurrection and the ascension are depicted, flanked by the right shaft , the fall of Paul , the anointing of the feet by Mary Magdalene and the calling of Zacchaeus . The paintings were created between 1580 and 1600 and were probably commissioned by the Putz family, the owners of Großkirchheim Palace . The tiara in the vault was added later.

The four-bay nave with a flat barrel is structured by pilasters . To the west is a two-story gallery, the lower balustrade of which swings forward. The chancel with a flat barrel has a rounded rear wall with a depiction of Christ's entry into Jerusalem by Christoph Brandstätter from Kötschach from 1840. The ceiling painting from the end of the 18th century shows the Ascension of Christ. The window zone is decorated with grisaille paintings.

Facility

Before 1891 Johann Rotschopf made the high altar, the two side altars and the console figures - Christ, the twelve apostles and Matthias - in the neo-Renaissance style . In the central niche of the high altar, there is a statue of St. George from 1781, flanked by Antonius of Padua and Franz Xavier, and a crucifixion group in the niche . The left side altar bears a statue of the Sacred Heart , the right a statue of Mary. The figures in the parapet niches of the pulpit basket represent the four evangelists . The sound cover of the pulpit closes with the tablets of the law and a cross.

The oil painting with the wonderful multiplication of bread with donor inscription from 1713 is labeled B. Finckh. The oil painting depicting Christ's entry into Jerusalem is believed to have come from the same donor and painter. A third oil painting shows Christ before the council . On the coat of arms of the Hohenburg family from 1584 on the north wall of the nave are the coats of arms of Thanhausen, Kienburg, Khevenhuler, Moshamb, Saurer, Stainpeck, Schandlperg and Röbatsch, on the right the Sigperg, Firmian, Rotnstein, Lueg, Horneg, Raming, Vilgreith and others Pictured by rust. On the south wall of the nave there is the epitaph made of white marble by Sebastian and Crescentia von Leomüller from 1629 with the relief of Saint Sebastian . The tombstone fragment of Hans Mathias Pacher from the first half of the 17th century is embedded in the floor of the tower hall.

Anthony's Chapel

The Antoniuskapelle west of the church serves today as a war memorial. The chapel, first mentioned in 1301, is marked on the keystone with 1522. It is a late Gothic building with a three-eighth closure, roof turrets and a chamfered round arch portal in the south. The original tracery has been preserved in the pointed arched windows at the end of the choir . During the restoration in 1994, the early baroque diamond cuboid decor was restored on the facade. The poorly preserved depictions of law and grace as well as the Last Judgment on the outer wall were probably painted by Wenzel Aichler in the second half of the 16th century.

Inside, a ribbed vault rises on consoles. The vault paintings in the end of the choir with flower tendrils, coat of arms medallions, Christ and Mary monograms as well as a monstrance in the center date from the second half of the 16th century. The early baroque mural of the Descent from the Cross on the west wall was whitewashed. The secco painting of a dead skeleton with a laurel wreath on the south wall represents the triumph of death. In addition to a sacrament niche with a straight lintel , a crucifix carved in 1659 is part of the furnishings.
