history

The region was already populated by people in prehistoric times. The geographical and climatic conditions made the area particularly suitable for human settlement. The oldest human traces found are tools that are around 8,000 years old. In addition, a 3000 to 4000 year old grave was discovered. Numerous finds from Roman times have been preserved. The origin of the name Coubon is not clear.

The place was first mentioned as Cobone in 1090 . At that time Coubon was a strategically important place, as the important road from Le Puy to Avignon crossed the Loire here. Numerous other roads ran through Coubon. The first mention of a bridge comes from 1290. After that, a ferry was used to cross the river for a long time. In 1845 a suspension bridge was inaugurated, but it was destroyed by floods in 1866. The new bridge from 1875 was replaced by a bridge suitable for automobiles in 1928. This was destroyed by a flood in 1980. The current bridge was inaugurated in 1984. In 1912 Coubon was connected to the railway network.
