Allègre is a French commune with 907 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Loire department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region . The municipality is located in the middle of the massif known as Velay, about 100 kilometers south of Clermont-Ferrand and about 20 kilometers north of Le Puy-en-Velay . The municipality is known for the castle ruins ( château d'Allègre ) that rise above the town center. Historically, the inhabitants lived mainly from cattle breeding, wood processing and lace manufacture, today tourism is a source of income.
