Saint-Paulien is a French commune with 2,416 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Haute-Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Le Puy-en-Velay and the canton of Saint-Paulien .
geography
Saint-Paulien is located in the Velay countryside on the Borne River , a tributary of the Loire . Saint-Paulien is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Saint-Geneys-près-Saint-Paulien in the north, Saint-Vincent in the east, Lavôute-sur-Loire in the southeast, Blanzac and Polignac in the south, Borne and Loudes in the southwest, and Lissac in the west as well Céaux-d'Allègre in the north-west.
Route nationale 102 and the former route nationale 106 (now D906) run through the municipality .
history
The Vellavi, a Gallo-Roman tribe, have been proven here since the 2nd century AD . The old Gallo-Roman settlement Ruessium , the main town, is located in the municipality . From the fifth century the rule changed to Anicium (today's Le Puy-en-Velay), Ruessium became the Civitas Vetula .
