The 17th century pigeon house is located in the middle of a green area on the northern edge of Pencaitland. It occupies a base area of 6.7 m in length and 5.8 m in width. The masonry consists of rubble from sandstone and has a height of 9.1 m at the highest point. Originally the facades were plastered with Harl . A simple, central cornice and another at eaves level run around. The final monopitch roof is covered with bluish slate. Its side ends are tiered. Halfway up there is a band with six semicircular entry holes. A rectangular entrance is let into the center of the south-facing front. There are also two semicircular entry holes above the cornice. Below the roof is an unadorned plaque that could have been a former sundial . 1136 nest boxes are arranged inside.
