history

The area was settled in the Middle Ages as a result of gold mining. Subsequently, the first agricultural settlers emerged from the mining miners. Mörtschach was first mentioned in a document in 1256.

The two cadastral communities Mörtschach and Stranach first came to the community of Winklern when local communities were formed in 1850 and only became independent to the local community of Mörtschach in 1898. On the occasion of the municipal structural reform of 1973 Mörtschach was reunited with Winklern for a second time, but split again in 1991 after a referendum in which 78% of the population voted for independence.

The creation of the Hohe Tauern National Park in 1981, whose core area includes the Großglockner and Schober groups, and whose outer zone extends down into the valley, was of great importance for the community, both from an economic - and especially tourist - as well as from an ecological perspective .

The highest school in the federal state of Carinthia ( 1700  m ) was located in the village of Asten (in the Astental ) for a long time , but it had to be closed in 2005 due to austerity measures and falling student numbers.

population

At the time of the 2001 census, Mörtschach had 942 inhabitants, 97.8% of whom were Austrian citizens . This made Mörtschach one of the ten smallest communities in Carinthia. The population has been declining since the 1970s.

In 2001, 96.2% of the population confessed to the Roman Catholic Church and 0.8% to the Evangelical Church, 0.6% were without religious beliefs.

coat of arms

The Mörtschach coat of arms symbolizes the link between natural and cultural areas that is typical for the entire Möll valley. The green background symbolizes nature and the national park, the chain is the attribute of St. Leonhard , patron of the Mörtschach parish church and patron saint of cattle. The Carinthian Tauernflower stylized in the coat of arms , an annual gentian plant, only occurs in alpine altitudes above 1900  m above sea level and is native to the upper Mölltal, among other places.

The coat of arms was awarded to the community on April 25, 1995 with the following blazon : "The silver flower of the Carinthian Tauernflower (Lomatogonium carinthiacum) is enclosed in a green shield by a silver chain border ." The flag is green and white with an incorporated coat of arms.
