The places Baldramsdorf and Gschieß were first mentioned in a deed of donation from 1166, the Ortenburg was first mentioned in 1093. From the end of the 12th century, Baldramsdorf and the neighboring settlements were owned by the Counts of Ortenburg until the 15th century . With the construction of the Porcia Castle in Spittal, the castle lost its importance and fell into ruin.
Below the castle was under Emperor Friedrich III. the Ortenburg Castle was built. Hannibal Alphons Prince of Porcia donated the building, later called the "Patern Castle", to the Hieroymite Order around 1710, for whom it was to serve as a base for fighting secret Protestantism .

coat of arms
The authority to use a coat of arms was granted to the community on August 8, 1966 on the occasion of its 800th anniversary of the first documentary mention. The coat of arms shows a golden angel wing on a blue background and goes back to the coat of arms of the Counts of Ortenburg , which showed three angel wings.
There is a legend about the creation of the coat of arms. According to this, a young count had to go on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and bring a consecrated souvenir with him as a token of love in order to marry a countess. He also brought a chip from the cross of Christ with him, but it got lost in a storm while crossing the sea. He returned to the Countess sadly and wanted to confess his failure to her when she showed him the chip. This was brought by a messenger - who was seen as an angel. The two then married and founded the town of Spanheim. The Ortenburgers emerged from the Spanheimers.
