history

In the older research it was assumed that Muldorf was first mentioned in a document from Pope Alexander III. , signed on April 6, 1177 in Venice . This document describes in detail the widespread ownership of the Millstatt Abbey . The location of the three mentioned brewing pans for salt production , the town of Halla , is to be equated with Bad Reichenhall and not with Mühldorf. Mühldorf got its name from the numerous mills that were built along the Mühldorfer Bach. Of the original eleven mills, two are still working today, the Trattner Mühle and the Glanzer Mühle are among the most famous art mills in Upper Carinthia.

In 1844 Johann Hopfgartner built the loden factory of the same name in Mühldorf , which still exists today and is known far beyond the borders.

In addition to the predominant agriculture, mining was also an important economic factor for a long time. Until 1918 there was a hammer mill in which Mühldorfer refining and crucible steel was produced. In 1920 the Treibacher chemical works built an electricity plant on Seebach. After the Second World War it was replaced by the Austrian Drau power plants . In the past, rafting, lime mining and brick burning, as well as mining ( asbestos and talc ) were important. Agriculture was still an important mainstay for the local population. Until 1848, the property was divided among the manors of Millstatt , Oberfalkenstein , Sommeregg and Sachsenburg .

The local community of Mühldorf was constituted in 1850; in 1865 it was attached to the market community of Obervellach and eleven years later became part of the local community of Kolbnitz . From 1913 Mühldorf was independent until 1973 and was then incorporated into the Reisseck community as part of the community reform. In 1992, after a referendum, the community regained its independence.

population

According to the 2001 census, Mühldorf has 963 inhabitants, 92.5% of which are Austrian and 3.4% Croatian citizens. 80.8% of the population profess the Roman Catholic and 6.1% the Evangelical Church, 1.8% Islam . 6.7% of the population have no religious affiliation.

The community grew from 410 inhabitants in 1869 to over 1,000 inhabitants in the middle of the 20th century and then fell again slightly. A positive migration balance has ensured a slight increase in the population since the turn of the millennium.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was awarded to Mühldorf on June 21, 1994 after it had recently gained independence. The blazon reads: Divided by green and gold by a diagonal wave bar divided into mixed colors, accompanied at the top by a golden mill wheel, at the bottom by a green M.

The green M in the lower part, the inclusion of which was expressly requested by the community, stands for the place and community name as well as for the Möll, which is also symbolized in the wave bar. In the upper part of the coat of arms there is a golden mill wheel. The Mühldorf flag is green and yellow with an incorporated coat of arms.
