Johann Baptist Türk (born August 13 or 17, 1775 in Innsbruck ; † September 30, 1841 in Töltschach ) was an Austrian freedom fighter .

Life

Türk was born the son of the university bookbinder Franz Xaver and Agnes Türk. After he had to leave high school for financial reasons, he became a bookbinder with his father . As early as April 2, 1797, he fought in a sniper company near Franzensfeste against the French and was honored for special bravery. In 1801 he moved to Klagenfurt . In 1808 he was sent to the Bavarian occupied Tyrol as a scout. Parallel to Andreas Hofer , who fought against the domination of Bavaria in Tyrol , Türk organized the resistance ("Kärntner Landsturm") in Carinthia in 1809 in the liberation struggle against the French. Austria's defeat in the war against France under Napoleon, which lasted 9 April-14 October 1809 could, however, do not prevent the door-led militia despite formidable opposition, although he even the Emperor Francis I . in August 1809 described the situation in Carinthia in an audience and also met Archduke Johann in Keszthely , who had given him the command of the Landsturm in Carinthia.

Johann Baptist Türk was married to the landowner's daughter Theresia Leitgeb and lived and died on Gut Töltschach near Maria Saal .

Türk has received numerous awards for his services, including the great gold medal of civil merit and the gold medal for bravery. The barracks of the Mountain Infantry Battalion 26 built in 1936 in Spittal an der Drau was named after Johann Baptist Türk.

In Klagenfurt there is a memorial plaque on Kramergasse 6 to commemorate him.
