history

The first documentary mention of the village of Berg im Drautal - as well as most of the localities in today's municipality - was made in 1267/68 as "Perige" in the register of ownership rights ( Urbar ) of the princely castle Greifenburg and around the same time in the register of the Berg parish church. The origin of the place name Berg can be found in mining , since silver and copper mining existed near Draßnitz north of Dellach and in Gnoppnitz. The earliest finds are traces of a Roman road that led to the mining town of Gurina in the Gail Valley, which has been known since pre-Celtic times . Parts of this street can still be seen in the “Römersteig” along the southern slope of the Jauken . The place gained its early importance mainly through the former pilgrimage church branch church St. Athanasius .

In 1849, the cadastral communities Berg and Goppelsberg were initially united to form the local community Berg. Emberg initially remained an independent local community, but was incorporated after the Carinthian municipal code was passed in 1864. Today's community name "Berg im Drautal" was set on July 1, 1965.

population

According to the 2001 census, Berg im Drautal has 1,373 inhabitants, 97.9% of whom are Austrian citizens. 93.2% of the population profess to the Roman Catholic Church, 2.5% to the Evangelical Church and 1.9% are of the Islamic faith. 1.5% of the population is non-denominational.

The community has had a fairly balanced population over the past 150 years. It rose from 1,020 in 1869 to just under 1,400 in the period 1970 to 2000. Since then, despite the positive birth balance , the population has declined slightly due to the negative migration balance .

  • The parish church of Mariae Birth , located above the mountain, is a late Romanesque building that was first mentioned in 1267. In the second half of the 15th century it was expanded into a fortified church, whereby the original shape of the tower and the nave were also changed.
  • The Roman Catholic branch church of St. Athanasius (St. Athanas near Berg) is located south of the village not far from Drautalstrasse in a flat field. It was first mentioned in 1443 and was probably built on a very old sanctuary. Inside the church there are fragments of Roman tombstone inscriptions. In 1485 it was consecrated to St. Nonosius by the Bishop of Caorle . Nonnosus veneration in Upper Carinthia, which is documented for St. Peter in Holz near Lendorf and for Molzbichl , goes back to Christianization from Freising in Bavaria. Nonnosus is still a patron saint in Freising Cathedral today . Later Nonnosus was replaced by St. Athanasen. The church used to be a popular pilgrimage church.

The non-profit association Stella Carinthia was founded when the Emberger Hochalm above the district of Emberg proved to be an ideal astronomical observation site. The Astro Association built a public observatory there and holds the international telescope meeting on the Emberger Alm every autumn .

coat of arms

Coat of arms at berg-im-drautal.png

The coat of arms was selected from a large number of designs by a vote of the population and awarded to the municipality on March 16, 1989. The official blazon of the coat of arms reads:

"In green, with two laterally jagged and swinging-connected points below the main base of the silver head of the shield, a silver, black-open Romanesque-Gothic church with a steep tower and an adjoining silver Romanesque round barn, accompanied at the front by a silver three-pronged crown, at the back by a silver miter crossed by a silver bishop's and cross with ribbons; a silver wavy bar in the base of the shield. "

The green ground sign indicates the abundance of forests in the municipality, the silver wavy band the Drau. The “local mountain” of the community, the Jauken, is indicated by the stylized silhouette in the head of the shield. In the heart of the coat of arms, the parish church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary is shown with one of the numerous Romanesque round barn from the time the church was built. The crown stands for the Marian patronage of the church, the bishop's cap with bishop's and cross staff for Saint Nonnosus, an early Christian local saint to whom the church in the valley floor was originally consecrated (it was not until the 17th century that Athanasius was determined to be the church's patron saint).

The flag is green and white with an incorporated coat of arms.
