Telescope meeting
A telescope meeting is a meeting of amateur astronomers to observe the stars together, compare telescope technology and talk shop. Due to the necessary darkness, they usually take place at the time of the new moon or when the moon is waning in rural or alpine areas. They usually take several days to increase the likelihood of clear night skies . Many meetings offer a supporting program in the form of lectures and workshops from various astronomical areas.
Telescope meetings take place year round, often as an annual event in the same location. Especially for beginners, they offer a good opportunity to try out different types and models before buying a telescope and to familiarize themselves with the basics of practical use.
The oldest telescope meeting in Europe is the International Telescope Meeting (ITT), which has existed since 1985 and takes place annually in autumn in Carinthia - mostly on the Emberger Alm . The currently largest astro observer meetings in Europe are the International Telescope Meeting Vogelsberg (ITV) and the Herzberger Telescope Meeting (HTT) in southern Brandenburg, each with several hundred participants.
