The almost 13 hectare lake Gederner is located in the Wetteraukreis, approx. 35 km from the district town Friedberg , surrounded by fields and meadows, on the edge of the nature park Hoher Vogelsberg . It is one of the source locations of the Nidder (river basin code number 2486) .
Emergence
The Gederner See is not a natural lake. It was created in the 18th century by the Stolberg-Wernigerode dynasty , the owners of the former Gedern lordship , as a fishing lake by damming a spring stream flowing into the Nidder .
tourism
Its flat bank area makes it an ideal bathing lake with very good bathing water quality and a water temperature of up to 24 ° C; Boats stay away from the shore area. On its shore there is a campsite, a boat rental and a family holiday village run by the German Recreation Agency .
There are carp , catfish and pike in the lake ; Fishing is permitted with a fishing permit, which is available at the reception upon presentation of a fishing license and payment of 10 euros.
In the 1950s, the Gederner See gained a certain popularity, as the singer Elvis Presley preferred to bathe there during his military service in Friedberg. A memorial stone reminds of him.
The "Gederner Seekrieg" 2008 to 2011
The lake is owned by Prince Philipp-Konstantin zu Stolberg-Wernigerode. The city of Gedern had had a lease agreement for use as a swimming lake since 1959, which expired at the end of 2008. Since the two parties could not come to an agreement on the lease amount, the city of Gedern had to dismantle all the facilities it had installed for bathing and boat rental. In addition, the owner's family expressed an interest in the renaturation of the lake. Attempts at mediation by the district administration initially failed; the administrative court in Gießen , which was called upon by the owner, decided in the first instance that bathing only began in 1959 and that preference should therefore be given to the original facility as a fish pond.
In 2011 the parties finally agreed on a new lease for 25 years; this contract was signed by the city council in March 2011, so that use as a swimming lake has been secured for the next 25 years since summer 2011 - with the option to extend.
