The real catfish (Siluridae) are a family of fish that occur in fresh waters in Eastern Europe and all over Asia, with the exception of Siberia and the Arabian Peninsula. Two species, the European catfish ( Silurus glanis ) and the Aristotle catfish ( Silurus aristotelis ), living in Europe.

features

Real catfish have scaly, bare skin. The head is flattened, the mouth wide. There is a pair of barbels on the upper jaw and one or two on the lower jaw. The dorsal fin is small or absent. It is supported by fewer than seven fin rays , if any . A fin spike never occurs. There is no adipose fin . The anal fin is long, supported by 41 to 110 fin rays and is fused with the caudal fin in the genus Silurichthys .

Depending on the species, they are eight to three meters long. The glass catfish (genus Kryptopterus ) are more or less translucent.

There are eleven to twelve genera and over 100 species , whereby the assignment of some species to their genera is handled differently by different authors and sometimes more genera are recognized.
