Silurus is a genus of fish from the family of the real catfish (Siluridae) within the order of the catfish-like (Siluriformes). It occurs in19 species in Eurasia .

features

Species of the genus Silurus have a very small dorsal fin and an anal fin that merges into the caudal fin surrounding the end of the tail , with a clear notch at the transition point. The hard ray of the dorsal fin is smooth, rough or serrated on the front and clearly serrated on the back in males, in females on the other hand smooth or only slightly serrated. The barbels on the upper jaw are well developed and extend beyond the edge of the gill cover. There are two or four barbels on the lower jaw. The eyes are on the top of the head.

The dorsal fin has one hard and one to six soft rays, the pectoral fins one hard and eight to 16 soft rays, the pelvic fins one hard and six to twelve soft rays and the anal fin 52 to 88 soft rays.
