Hialmar Rendahl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Hialmar Rendahl (born December 26, 1891 in Jönköping , † May 2, 1969 in Stockholm , Sweden ) was a Swedish zoologist and artist. Within zoology, his main interests lay in ichthyology (in particular loaches (Cobitidae) and flat loaches (Balitoridae)) and herpetology . He also developed the concept of bird ringing in Sweden in 1913 , whereby the birds were given the return address “Return Riksmuseum Stockholm”.

Life

Rendahl completed his Abitur (general university entrance qualification) in Jönköping in 1910. In the same year he began studying at Stockholm University . In 1916 he completed his studies with a bachelor's degree (Swedish: Filosofie kandidat) in zoology, botany and geography . In 1924 he became a Ph.D. and lecturer in zoology. In 1933, the rise was followed by the Head of vertebrates ( Vertebrata ) in riksmuseet Naturhistoriska and professor . He held this position until 1957.

Even during his studies he worked as a freelance journalist. He wrote numerous scientific articles, translated books for the Nordiska förlaget publishing house and published his drawings. From 1912 he worked for the Naturhistoriska riksmuseet and started the bird ringing program in 1913. It was not until 1914 that he became a permanent employee of the museum. As early as 1913 he wrote his first zoological essays and treatises on birds, reptiles, frogs, fish and mammals. For Världslitteraturens förlag he edited Brehms Thierleben (Swedish: Brehms Djurens liv). The publishing house Åhlén & Söners published two books from the series Vi och vår värld (German: We and our world). The Tidens förlag finally published a six-volume work by Rendahl with the title Fågelboken (German: Vogel-Buch) with around 60,000 articles.

In January 1958, Rendahl retired and retired. Up until two weeks before his death, he was studying the migratory behavior of birds in Sweden.

He pursued his artistic interest since his youth. He painted caricatures for the student newspaper "Phi-Ex". He worked with tempera , gouache , watercolor , oil paints , wax crayons and linocut . Over the years he developed a keen interest in abstract art , which strongly shaped his ideas of color and shape.

Taxa

Together with his colleague Einar Lönnberg, Rendahl has described the following subspecies:

  • Red-breasted quail ( Odontophorus speciosus soderstromii (Lonnberg & Rendahl, 1922))
  • Pacific crested ear ( Pseudocolaptes lawrencii johnsoni (Lönnberg & Rendahl, 1922))
  • Bergtinamu ( Nothocercus bonapartei plumbeiceps (Lönnberg & Rendahl, 1922))
  • Ecuador Andean Hummingbird ( Oreotrochilus chimborazo soderstromi (Lönnberg & Rendahl, 1922))

Added to this are the names Heliothrix auritus major (Lönnberg & Rendahl, 1922) (in reality black-eared jewelry hummingbird , Heliothryx auritus auritus ( Gmelin 1788)), Momotus lessoni gualeae (Lönnberg & Rendahl, 1922) ( Hochland motmotialis . Momotus aequator ) , which are currently regarded as invalid synonyms aequatorialis ( Gould , 1858)), Iridophanes pulcherrima gualeae (Lönnberg & Rendahl, 1922) ( Halsbandtangare , Iridophanes pulcherrimus pulcherrimus ( Sclater, PL , 1853)), Tityra nigriceps gualeae (Lönnberg & Rendahl, 1922) ( Weißnackentityra , Tityra semifasciata nigriceps ( Allen , 1888)), Rynchops melanura intermedia (Rendahl, 1919) ( American scissors beak , Rynchops niger cinerascens ( Spix , 1825)), Pyranga rubriceps rufistigmata (Lönnberg & Rendahl, 1922) ( scarlet head tangar , Piranga rubriceps ( Gray, GR , 1844) )

fishes

In the field of fish, Rendahl also described several genera in addition to many species.

snakes

  • Cauca coral otter ( Micrurus multiscutatus (Rendahl & Vestergren , 1940))
  • Colombian lance viper ( Bothrops colombianus (Rendahl & Vestergren, 1940))
  • El Tambo nasal pods ( Epicrionops columbianus (Rendahl & Vestergren, 1938))
  • Saphenophis tristriatus (Rendahl & Vestergren, 1941)
  • Ringed boa ( Corallus annulatus blombergi (Rendahl & Vestergren, 1940))
  • Ringed boa ( Corallus annulatus colombianus (Rendahl & Vestergren, 1940))

Dedication names

Since Rendahl was highly regarded, especially among ichthyologists, some dedicated the scientific name of a fish to him. The following genus and some species were named after Rendahl:

genus

species

  • Acrossocheilus rendahli ( Lin , 1931)
  • Echiodon rendahli ( Whitley , 1941)
  • Limnichthys rendahli ( Parrott , 1958)
  • Pimelodella rendahli ( Ahl , 1925)
  • Porochilus rendahli (Whitley, 1928)
  • Pseudobagrus rendahli ( Pellegrin & Fang , 1940)
  • Schistura rendahli ( Bănărescu & Nalbant , 1968)
