Einar Lönnberg

Axel Johan Einar Lönnberg (born December 24, 1865 in Stockholm ; † November 21, 1942 there ) was a Swedish zoologist and conservationist.

Life

Due to the influence of his father, who was a member of the Swedish parliament and a doctor of botany, Einar Lönnberg's interest in flora and fauna was aroused early on. After completing his studies at Uppsala University , he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in 1887 and his Master of Arts in 1890 . In 1891 he received his Ph.D. From 1891 to 1903 he worked as an inspector in the fisheries service. Between 1892 and 1893 he toured Florida . In 1899 he was involved in an expedition to the Caspian Sea . After a short work in a museum in Gothenburg , he took over the management of the vertebrate department at Naturhistoriska riksmuseet in Stockholm from 1904 , which he held until his retirement in 1933. In 1904 he founded the biological journal " Fauna och Flora " and was the editor until his death in 1942. In 1905 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . Between 1910 and 1911 he made a trip to East Africa. In the following years he studied the herpetological and ichthyological material that Swedish expeditions brought with them from New Guinea , Australia , Southeast Asia , tropical Africa and Brazil . In 1919 he became a member of the Kungliga Vetenskaps- och Vitterhetssamhället i Göteborg . In 1922 he became an honorary member of the British Ornithologists' Union . In 1925 he was made an honorary member of the Leopoldina , to which he had belonged since 1910. Between 1925 and 1942 he was academic prefect at the Kristinebergs Marina Forskningsstation (Marine Zoological Research Station Kristineberg) near Lysekil .

Lönnberg was a committed conservationist and fought for new laws to protect Swedish reindeer and water birds.

Scientific initial descriptions and dedication names

Lönnberg wrote, among other things, the first descriptions of the head- banded catfish , the banded marvel , the wood reindeer , the Rio-Beni jumper and the relic gull . In the species epithet , Lönnberg is honored, among other things, in the fish species Trematomus loennbergii described by Charles Tate Regan and in the subantarctic scua subspecies Stercorarius antarcticus lonnbergi described by Gregory Mathews . Otto Graf von Zedlitz and Trützschler dedicated a subspecies of the willow tit ( Poecile montanus loennbergi ) to Lönnberg in 1925 . In 1926 named Masauji Hachisuka the skylark subspecies Alauda arvensis lonnbergi honor Lönnbergs. In addition, Lönnberg is the namesake for the Lönnberg Valley , a valley on the island of South Georgia in the South Atlantic.
