Royal Science and Literature Society in Gothenburg

The Royal Science and Literature Society in Gothenburg ( Swedish Kungliga Vetenskaps- och Vitterhets-Samhället i Göteborg , abbreviated KVVS) is a Swedish academy founded in Gothenburg in 1773.

history

The academy's origins lie in a beautiful literature club founded in 1760 by Johan Rosén , the lecturer at Gothenburg's grammar school. His successor, the later Bishop Martin Georg Wallenstråle , took on other high-ranking people from Gothenburg and other parts of the country as members and converted the club into an academy. Members of the first hour were z. B. Niclas Sahlgren (Director of the Swedish East India Company ), Jonas Alströmer , William Chalmers , the author Jacob Wallenberg and the botanist Pehr Osbeck as well as a few women like Anna Maria Lenngren . Initially, the academy only dealt with aesthetic literature; but soon new sections emerged, for example for economics, natural history, botany and the history of Sweden and Gothenburg. Gustav III (Sweden) confirmed the academy on March 6, 1778.

description

As of January 1, 2013, the Academy consisted of five honorary members, 268 Swedish and 90 foreign members. New members are won by election. There are monthly meetings between September and May. A public gathering is held every year on January 24th, the Academy's holiday and the birthday of Gustav III. held. The academy's finances are made up of 17 funds, most of which are distributed as grants . Further financial resources are given as scientific and literary prizes to people with outstanding achievements in these areas. For example, Esaias Tegnér received his first awards from this academy in 1802 and 1804.

Another focus is the support of Swedish museums. Through close ties with the East India Company, the Academy was able to collect a large number of objects and natural objects from distant countries. These objects formed the basis for almost all museums and the Gothenburg Botanical Gardens . In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the academy supported several scientific expeditions, such as Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld's voyage on the Vega ship .
