Pawling is a municipal administrative unit (town) in Dutchess County in the US state of New York . In the early 18th century, part of today's metropolitan area was disputed between the colonies of New York and Connecticut. Between 1730 and 1750 Quakers settled in what is now Quaker Hill and in 1742 they built their first meeting house. This was replaced in 1764 by the larger Oblong Friends Meeting House , which still exists and can be visited today. In 1973 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places . It was in this house in 1767 that the Quakers made a solemn declaration against slavery , prohibiting their own members from keeping slaves. Other significant historical buildings in Pawling include the John Kane House (around 1740) and the Akin Free Library (completed in 1908).

During the War of Independence in 1778 and 1779, Quaker Hill was temporarily the headquarters of George Washington's troops . In 1788, the Town of Pawling was founded, within which the Village of Pawling in 1893 received local government ( incorporated village ). In 1807, however, part of the Town of Pawling was ceded to the neighboring Town of Dover . Pawling is home to Dutcher Golf Course , the oldest public golf course in the United States.
