Silvana Mangano

Silvana Mangano (born April 21, 1930 in Rome , † December 16, 1989 in Madrid ) was an Italian actress .

Life

Mangano was born in Rome to an Italian father and an English mother (Ivy Webb from Croydon ). The family was impoverished by World War II . Silvana learned to dance and worked as a photo model. At the age of sixteen she was voted “Miss Rome” in 1946 and got a role in Mario Costa's film L'Elisir d'amore .

In 1947, Silvana Mangano took part in the legendary “Miss Italia” beauty contest , in which Gina Lollobrigida , Eleonora Rossi Drago , Gianna Maria Canale and the later winner Lucia Bosè stood for election.

Her breakthrough came in 1949 with the film Bitter Rice . Since then, she has been one of the great female film stars in Italy. She became internationally known for her role as Penelope / Circe in The Voyages of Ulysses alongside Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn .

Silvana Mangano married the film producer Dino De Laurentiis in 1949 , and from 1983 the couple lived separately. However, the marriage, which resulted in four children, never ended in divorce.

Silvana Mangano suffered from lung cancer . After an operation on December 4, 1989, she fell into a coma. She died without regaining consciousness on the night of December 15-16 in a hospital in Madrid .
