Gregory Ratoff

Gregory Ratoff (born April 20, 1897 in Saint Petersburg , Russian Empire , † December 14, 1960 in Solothurn , Switzerland ) was an American actor , film director and producer .

Life

Ratoff was born the son of Russian Jews and moved to the United States in 1922. There he began his career as an actor on Broadway , but was later seen in supporting roles in Hollywood productions - thanks to his accent mainly as a foreigner. In 1939 he directed the film Intermezzo for David O. Selznick , Ingrid Bergman's first film in Hollywood.

In 1944 he produced the pro-Soviet propaganda film Song of Russia . He took on his most famous role as an actor in 1950 in Joseph L. Mankiewicz's successful production Alles über Eva . Ratoff was one of the first producers to purchase the rights to James Bond from Ian Fleming for $ 6,000 , and who first released James Bond on American television on October 21, 1954.

In 1923 he married the actress Eugenie Leontovich , from whom he divorced in 1949.

In 1960 Ratoff was honored with a star on the Walk of Fame .
