action
Patty meets the architect Donald Gresham on the roof of the Empire State Building . She lets him invite her to his house for a few drinks and a meal. There she meets Donald's neighbors. Cynthia, his ex-fiancée and her father David, a bon vivant, live on the floor above Donald. Both men immediately take a liking to the young Patty, but she is not particularly interested in the advances of both men. She engages the men in a conversation about morality and sexuality.
The next morning Patty leaves the apartment and goes back to the roof of the Empire State Building. There you make Donald a marriage proposal.
background
Johannes Heesters , Hardy Krüger and Johanna Matz have guest appearances as tourists. Preminger filmed the material again for the German audience in the same year. The maiden on the roof was cast with Krüger and Matz in the leading roles, the guest appearances as tourists were made by McNamara and Holden. Tom Tully, Dawn Addams, Fortunio Bonanova and Gregory Ratoff play their roles in both versions of the film.
Clouds are everywhere was not shown in Germany until 1960, since the German version of the film was shown first.
In the US states of Maryland , Kansas and Ohio , the film was initially not allowed to be shown because of the very open discussions about sexuality at the time. The film production company United Artists took legal action against these performance bans. The lawsuit against the state of Kansas went to the United States Supreme Court in 1954 . United Artists won all lawsuits and clouds are everywhere , thus allowed to be performed in all states of the USA.
