The Cardinal is the title of an American feature film made in 1963. Directed by Otto Preminger , the fictional plot is only very loosely based on the novel of the same name by Henry Morton Robinson .

content

The film shows the career and rise of Stephen Fermoyle, a young American of simple origin. Convinced of his vocation, Fermoyle was ordained a priest in 1917 . Fermoyle feels so closely connected to the Catholic Church that his dogmatism prevents his sister Mona from marrying a Jew . Years later, when Mona falls seriously ill during her pregnancy , Stephen decides that the life of the unborn child has priority: Mona dies in agony. Tormented by a remorse, Stephen lets his priesthood rest and works as a language teacher in Vienna. Here he falls in love with the pretty student Annemarie. But Stephen's calling to the priesthood ultimately proves stronger. Inwardly matured, he entered the service of the Vatican until he returned to Vienna on a papal mission in 1938 . Stephen is supposed to help prevent National Socialist terror . But politics turns out to be much more powerful - and Stephen has to stand by and watch as Annemarie is held captive by the Gestapo . In 1939, just before the outbreak of World War II, Stephen was promoted to cardinal.

Reviews

"An entertaining film adaptation of the bestseller , which, despite many church-historical facts, never goes into depth on the religious, social and political issues raised."

"... a fuzzy, but maudlin and full of Hollywood glamor picture of the career of an American cardinal."

“Done neatly and neatly, but without any deeper value because the director avoided the obtrusive problems that should have dealt with the humanity commanded by Christ. Understandable from 18. "

Awards

  • The film was nominated for six Oscars in 1964 , including Otto Preminger as best director.
  • The film won a Golden Globe , as did John Huston for Best Supporting Actor; Tom Tryon, Romy Schneider and Otto Preminger were each nominated for a Golden Globe.
