occupation

The Cardinal is the title of a semi-documentary film produced and published in 2011 . He tells of the life and work of the Archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal Franz König (1905–2004) , both in play scenes and in archive recordings . The film is a co-production of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation with 3sat and celebrated its premiere on June 23, 2011 on ORF 2 .

action

At the beginning of the film, it is shown how the young Franz König is exposed to the severity of his stepfather Johann Kaiser on his parents' farm, who cannot understand why his stepson has mostly very good in the certificate . Instead of educating himself, Franz should much rather help on the farm.

Jump in time to 1960: On the way to the funeral of his fellow student, Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac , König and his driver are involved in a traffic accident. While in hospital, he decides, after his recovery, to do more with the Eastern Churches and seek an opening of the West. For his services he is called to the Vatican City to meet Pope John XXIII. to advise. He plans a meeting of the universal church to lead the church and its message into the 20th century. With the help of Cardinal König, the pontiff succeeds in opening the Second Vatican Council .

In Austria itself, the Christian Cardinal Franz König succeeds in entering into a dialogue with the Austrian Social Democratic Party , which is rather remote from the Church, under its chairman, Chancellor Bruno Kreisky. For this, however, he is attacked by some conservative circles close to the Austrian People's Party . A man who one day comes to see him in the confessional even threatens him, as King could dare to even talk to the “Reds”. And although König and Kreisky maintain a good basis for discussion with each other, the relationship between the two men is clouded because Kreisky passes the so-called deadline regulation by law, which the Church traditionally rejects. Accordingly, an abortion should remain unpunished until the third month.

In Rome in 1978, König became a supporter and promoter of the election of Cardinal Karol Józef Wojtyła from Krakow as Pope John Paul II. Shortly before his 80th birthday, he discussed his successor with him. He is horrified to see that the Pope has chosen the conservative Hans Hermann Groër to succeed him as Archbishop of Vienna. When the latter was embroiled in a child abuse scandal in the mid-1990s and the Austrian Catholic Church suffered as a result, König became even more resigned.

The film ends with the last years and days in the life of Cardinal Franz König; It is rounded off with pictures from his almost one hundred years of life.

background

In addition to the archive recordings mentioned above, numerous companions of the Cardinal also have their say in short interviews, including Annemarie Fenzl , the Cardinal's former secretary, the historian Gerhard Jagschitz , the publicist Heinz Nussbaumer , Auxiliary Bishop Helmut Krätzl and the former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt .

Wolfgang Moser , who embodies the master of ceremonies in the film, was also Cardinal König's master of ceremonies in real life. Michael Schönborn , the actor, whose unnamed character Cardinal König accuses in the film of sympathizing with the “Reds”, is the brother of König's successor as Archbishop of Vienna, Christoph Schönborn . The shooting took place in Vienna and in Altenburg Abbey in Lower Austria .

For a film that deals with an Austrian theme, which is unusual, almost all actors speak High German.

The film was presented to the public for the first time on June 14, 2011 in the presence of Federal President Heinz Fischer and the Apostolic Nuncio in Austria, Peter Zurbriggen .
