Heinz Nussbaumer (born July 16, 1943 in Bad Reichenhall ) is an Austrian journalist , author and newspaper editor.

Life

Nussbaumer began - in addition to studies at the University of Salzburg (theology, legal and state philosophy as well as art history) - his journalistic career as press officer for the later Chancellor Josef Klaus (1962/63) and as editor of the Salzburger Volkszeitung (1963-1966). From 1966 he was brought to Vienna by Hugo Portisch, initially an editor and from 1971 to 1990 foreign policy director of the Vienna daily Kurier. In addition to large reports, series and countless comments, Nussbaumer conducted many internationally cited interviews with the politically responsible of his time (Dalai Lama, Ronald Reagan, Michael Gorbatschow, Chou En-lai, Indira Gandhi, Shah Mohamed Reza Pahlewi, Sultan Qaboos, Muammar Gaddafi, Yasser Arafat, Anwar al-Sadat, King Hussein and the main European statesmen). Politicians - above all UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim and Federal Chancellor Bruno Kreisky - repeatedly used his personal proximity to Israeli, Arab and US statesmen to establish confidential contacts. From 1990 to 1999 Heinz Nußbaumer was press officer of the Austrian presidential chancellery, as well as political advisor and spokesman for the federal presidents Kurt Waldheim and Thomas Klestil . During this time he also drafted all the important presidential speeches - and also stood by church leaders confidentially in questions of state policy. Forced to withdraw from the Vienna Hofburg for health reasons, Nussbaumer took on the role of host in the television program “philosophicum” from 2001 to 2008 and was also the leader of religious discussions (“kreuz & quer”) on ORF . From 2002 to 2013 he was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Europe's largest SOS Children's Village in Hinterbrühl near Vienna. Heinz Nussbaumer has been editor and columnist of the respected Austrian weekly newspaper “ Die Furche ” since 2003 . In addition to intensive lectures (mainly on religious topics) Nussbaumer moderated several international conferences in Vienna ("Islam in a Pluralistic World", "Dialogue of Cultures and Religions", "Austria Ten Years in the EU", "Vienna Culture Congress") ...
