Dr. Karl Renner Journalism Prize
The Dr. Karl Renner Publizistikpreis is awarded annually by the Austrian Journalists Club (ÖJC) to Austrian journalists for excellent, long-term journalistic achievements. It is named after Karl Renner , the founder of the First and Second Republic of Austria.
History of the price
The award was founded in 1964 by the journalists' section of the art, media and liberal professions union in the Austrian trade union federation ÖGB and financed by the trade union bank BAWAG PSK .
After there were disagreements between the ÖGB, the SPÖ and the then head of the journalists' union Günther Nenning in the late 1970s / early 1980s because of his involvement in the occupation of the Hainburger Au , BAWAG withdrew from financing the award. Nenning then wanted to finance the price through a building block campaign by the members of the journalists' union, which failed.
Since the award was not financially feasible for the journalists' union, it was handed over with all rights to the Austrian Journalists Club (ÖJC). Its chairman Norbert Adam created a board of trustees of Austrian companies and institutions and was thus able to ensure the funding and regular awarding of the prize by the ÖJC since 1984. His successor, Fred Turnheim , expanded this system further. Since then, the prize has been awarded regularly by the ÖJC.
Since 2010, the prize has not been awarded every two years, but annually and in the categories online, print, radio and television.
In 2020, the award was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
