Julia Ortner (born April 30, 1972 in Vienna ) is an Austrian journalist .

Julia Ortner studied journalism and philosophy at the University of Vienna after graduating from high school. Her journalistic career began in 1998 with the daily newspaper Die Presse . There she worked for the Vienna Journal and the domestic affairs department. In 2000 she became editor of the Viennese weekly newspaper Falter , where she headed the city life department. In 2006 she moved to the politics department. Since May 1, 2011 Ortner in the editorial team was ORF - news program ZIB 2 operates regularly, they also moderated the press hours . On April 1, 2015, she took over as deputy editor-in-chief and head of politics for the Austrian weekly magazine News . In December 2016 it was announced that Julia Ortner would be leaving the magazine together with the previous editor-in-chief Eva Weissenberger and other colleagues. Ortner has been a political columnist for Vorarlberger Nachrichten since September 2017 . Both Julia Ortner's father, Thomas Ortner , and her grandfather Franz Ortner were editors-in-chief of Vorarlberger Nachrichten.

Since August 2017, together with the journalists Sebastian Krause and Eva Weissenberger , she has been running the podcast " Quite openly said ", where she alternately speaks weekly with experts about Austrian domestic politics and international developments. For this first political podcast in the country, the publishers “Frankly said” received the “Special Prize for Innovation” from the industry magazine “Der Österreichische Journalist” in 2017. In 2017, Ortner and her partners also founded the media company "Missing Link", which also deals with podcasts and the development of new business models in journalism.

In July 2020, it was announced that Julia Ortner would join the editorial team of the ORF policy magazine Report and would thus return to ORF after five years.
