DATUM - Seiten der Zeit is an Austrian magazine that has been published since 2004 . The magazine appears ten times a year, with a double edition being published for the months of July / August and December / January. Launched to 10,000.

The magazine appears in the classic magazine format (21 by 28 centimeters) with a scope of 96 to 116 pages and is printed on non-glossy normal paper. The magazine is distributed by the distribution company Morawa . The editor-in-chief has been Stefan Apfl since November 2015.

history

Date was founded by Klaus Stimeder and financial consultant Johannes Weyringer with the ambition to offer an alternative to the papers previously available on the market. The declared goal of Datum was to become the Austrian equivalent of magazines like “New Yorker” and Zeit in the long term .

Together with the magazine's zero number, the editorial advisory board was also presented in May 2004, which was supposed to support the young editorial team in an advisory capacity. It consisted of Michael Frank , the correspondent of the Süddeutsche Zeitung in Vienna, the well-known pastor Georg Sporschill , as well as the renowned Austrian journalists Peter Huemer , Barbara Coudenhove-Kalergi and Anneliese Rohrer .

Initially, the magazine was still produced in the editor-in-chief's apartment, but it soon earned a reputation as a quality medium among observers and critics . The Neue Zürcher Zeitung called Datum 2005 an “Austrian Trouvaille”, and columnist Tyler Brûlé named Datum the “International best news magazine” in the Financial Times in the same year . The artist Günter Brus and the philosopher Franz Schuh could be won as regular columnists .

In 2009 Stimeder handed over the editor-in-chief to the journalist Stefan Kaltenbrunner, in 2010 he finally sold his shares to his partner Weyringer, who in turn sold a minority stake to Stefan Kaltenbrunner. In 2013 half of the date went to the media holding company Medecco , founded by the former Styria Media Group board member (later Red Bull Mediahouse and now the News publishing group) Horst Pirker and the former managing director of the daily newspaper die Presse , Reinhold Gmeinbauer. In 2015, Medecco became the sole owner of the magazine.

In February 2016, Medecco announced that the magazine Datum no longer fits into the strategic image of the holding company, which wants to concentrate on “top-notch” titles. The journalist Stefan Apfl, who only took over the editor-in-chief from Kaltenbrunner in November 2015, then bought the title rights and the subscriber file of Datum as part of a so-called asset deal , and announced that he wanted to make a future possible for Datum.

On October 8, 2016, after a break of several months, the first issue of Datum will be published by the newly founded Satzbau Verlag. Before that, Monopol Medien GmbH and ex-LIF boss Alexander Zach had joined as investors.

On May 4, 2018 it was announced that Zeitverlag is aiming for a cooperation with date on the reader and advertising market. The current publishing representative of Zeitverlag, Sebastian Loudon , will also be the publisher of Datum .

content

The content of the magazine is multi-thematic; in addition to reports and analyzes of domestic policy, each issue also includes reports on foreign policy and multi-page photo series. Social and cultural issues are dealt with in the Lifestyle section. A well-known recurring rubric was a monthly interview format, which was initially conducted by Michael Fleischhacker , later by Sibylle Hamann and then by Claudia Unterweger . Current columnists are Franz Schuh and the journalist Saskia Jungnikl . Former columnists include the editor-in-chief of the daily Die Presse Rainer Nowak and the author Katja Kullmann .

In the German press, for example, an investigative research from 2014 was widely quoted from Datum , according to which large German companies are trying to manipulate public opinion with fake postings; a few years earlier, an interview with the journalist Arpad Hagyo, who worked for the newspaper Austria conducted a telephone interview with the robber during a bank robbery. There was also a report about the discovery of an action by the artist group Do we have no other worries , which wanted to expose populism in Austria with a fictitious correspondence to summit crosses .
