Axel Springer Prize for young journalists

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Axel Springer Prize for Young Journalists is an annual journalist prize . It is awarded by the Axel Springer Academy to young journalists in the categories of print , television , radio and internet .

History and endowment

The prize was awarded for the first time in 1991. It is named after the founder and owner of today's Axel Springer AG , the publisher Axel Springer (1912–1985). The award ceremony takes place annually on his birthday, May 2nd, in Berlin . In the meantime, the price modalities have been changed and updated. There was no award ceremony in 1999. Since 2001, awards have been made in the four categories of print, radio, television and internet. Because of the corona crisis, the prize was awarded digitally for the first time in its history in 2020.

Works can be submitted for the award that were published in a German-language medium for the first time in the respective previous year or that were broadcast by a German-language broadcaster or published on the Internet and whose authors were not older than 33 years at the time of publication. This age limit also applies to co-authors who were significantly involved in the creation of the work. One work per author can be submitted in each category and one work per author in the three categories in the Print category.

The contributions should be dedicated to “current political, economic, cultural, sporting and / or social issues”.

Until 2016, the award sponsor, the Axel Springer Academy , awarded a total annual prize money of 54,000  euros . The award was endowed with 6,000 euros in the Print category for the best work in three different categories (three first prizes). In the other three categories of television, radio and internet, three prizes were awarded per category, each endowed with 6000 euros (1st prize), 4000 euros (2nd prize) and 2000 euros (3rd prize).

The awarding body, the Axel Springer Academy , is currently awarding a total of 28,000 euros in prize money. Since 2016, the prizes are no longer awarded according to media categories - instead three main prizes in bronze, silver and gold as well as two excellence awards for “Investigative Research” and “Creative Visualization” are given. The main prizes are endowed with 10,000 euros, 5,000 euros and 3,000 euros as well as 5,000 euros each for the excellence awards.
