Patrick Gensing (born 1974 ) is a German journalist , book author and blogger . He worked as a news editor at tagesschau.de . He has been head of the tagesschau.de online portal faktenfinder since the beginning of April 2017 . Its content focus is on the topics of disinformation , fake news and right-wing extremism .

Life

In 2003 and 2004, Gensing completed an internship at NDR . He then worked as an author and employee at tagesschau.de and Panorama . His panorama contribution Racism in the stadium: The world as a guest of enemies? was nominated for the Civis - Europe's Media Prize for Integration 2007. He also wrote for the time online -Blog fault indicator . He was a speaker at the ARD and ZDF media academy on the subject of "Neo-Nazis and the Internet".

In a 2015 interview with the media magazine Vocer , Gensing stated that as a youngster he was “ anti- fascist” and that he noticed that right-wing extremism was not a topic in the media at the time. When he "started working full-time as a journalist," he assumed, "most of my colleagues are probably familiar with it, but it wasn't really like that. I noticed that I had a knowledge advantage, even though I did I haven't dealt with the topic for several years. When I started at tagesschau.de, there wasn't anyone who was really interested in it. That's why I opened up the orphaned field. "

Since the end of 2005, Gensing has been co-editor and editor for the internet project NPD-Blog , which was nominated for the Grimme Online Award in 2007. In 2007 he was nominated for the Golden Prometheus in the category of online journalist of the year . In May 2009 he was awarded 3rd place in the Internet category of the Axel Springer Prize for young journalists. In October 2011 the NPD blog was renamed Publikative.org . In 2013 it was nominated for the Grimme Online Award in the Information category on the grounds that Publikative.org had established itself as a central information platform on right-wing extremism in Germany. Also in 2013, Gensing was awarded the Alternative Media Prize for the Publikative.org blog.

From 2015 to 2017 Gensing occasionally published articles on the website of the Brandenburg State Center for Civic Education .

Patrick Gensing at Re: publica  2018

Since it was founded in April 2017, Gensing has headed the Tagesschau's fact finder . This is an ARD research editorial team to combat fake news . In addition, he has been responsible for the “Tagesschau Investigative” department since April 2019.

Positions

Gensing criticizes left, right and Islamist anti-Semitism. He also assumes a threat from propaganda and disinformation in Europe, for example from Russian foreign broadcasters in Germany or from troll networks in the 2017 federal election .

As a journalist, Gensing regularly appears as a speaker and in interviews on the subject of disinformation and speaks out against legal measures against fake news: Dealing with fake news is anything but simple and striking. One cannot simply write "not true" under it because "most of the targeted false reports (...) have a real core". Statistics often only convey half the truth that you always need experts to classify the numbers. "This belief in numbers, some of which exists, is misleading." Gensing said in 2015, as the founder of the watch blog publikative.org, that a mere accumulation of facts is not the job of journalism. "I believe that if you take an attitude in journalism, you can win people over." This is necessary in order to then classify the facts. Gensing warns: "The more false statements are repeated, the greater the risk that people will say: I've heard that so often now and never anything to the contrary, that will be true." The willingness to believe in false reports is also "by no means limited to populists".

At re: publica 2019, he criticized the susceptibility of online news journalism to errors. But Gensing also sees the discussions about disinformation and fake news as an opportunity for journalism, because there is a return to research. The fight against fake news is "in any case not a task of the law, but a task of journalism".

After the killing of the CDU politician Walter Lübcke , Gensing pointed to the long-term radicalization and the importance of violence as a political tool among right-wing extremists.

He also criticizes the AfD , which "[comes] to the role of alleged taboo breakers, whose claims must be refuted". In his opinion, the AfD is “currently more dangerous than the NPD ” for the political climate .

Gensing speaks out against the political use of the "old [n] and very German [n]" term home because it promotes xenophobia. According to him, the concept of home is also a “gateway for anti-Semitism ” and right-wing criticism of capitalism when it turns against cosmopolitans and “placeless finance capital ”. In 2015, he therefore criticized the corresponding discussions about a possible political use of the term within the SPD .
