In the beginning, the Bavarian Broadcasting Company broadcast a second radio program on FM from Nuremberg , the content of which was more focused on Franconia . It started on August 18, 1950. In 1958, the BR expanded the new radio wave into a full program based in Munich. As part of a program reform in 1974, it was named Bayern 2 . Bayern 2 initially broadcast classical music, so-called serious music . Part of the program scheme were a number of word programs such as Landfunk under the direction of Erich Geiersberger (1959 to 1991) and the youth and music show Club 16, and from 1979 its successor Zündfunk . In 1960, regional windows began on Sundays (Franconia, Old Bavaria, Swabia), which were extended in time in 1971 (also Monday to Friday) and geographically from 1973 to 1979 (East Bavaria, Main Franconia, Munich) and switched to Bayern 1 in 1995. After the special-interest program Bayern 4 (2004–2009 Bayern 4 Klassik, since 2010 BR-Klassik ) went on air in October 1980, more and more pure word broadcasts found their way into Bayern 2; finally the program was renamed Bayern 2 Wort . In 2003, after a further program reform, musical content was added again on a larger scale. Bayern 2 was named Bayern 2 Radio . Since October 8, 2007, the program has been running again under the name Bayern 2.

Bayern 2 offers current reporting (politics, culture, business, science), reports from Bavaria and around the world, radio plays and features , as well as cabaret ( radioSpitzen ) , glosses and consumer-oriented programs such as B. the broadcast notebook , which emerged from the women's radio , later family radio . Another focus of the program is the “Knowledge” area with the programs IQ - Science and Research and radioWissen , which are also among the most frequently accessed podcasts. History is conveyed in the daily calendar sheet series , which the editor of the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Gerhard Matzig, rates as “knowledgeable, amazing and entertaining”. Also popular is the weekly Sunday supplement with thematically selected texts and pieces of music, which Michael Skasa had compiled and presented over 40 years until the end of 2011 .

The music on Bayern 2 covers a spectrum from soul to chanson to singer-songwriters from all over the world. Classical jazz , world music and independent are presented in various special programs . The home sound from Bavaria and the Alpine region has meanwhile become of particular musical importance .

The in-house productions of the BR include the more than ten-hour radio play versions of The Magic Mountain based on the novel by Thomas Mann (Ursendung 2000) and by Moby Dick or the whale by Herman Melville (Ursendung 2002). Doctor Faustus, an eleven-part radio play based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Mann, a joint production with Hessischer Rundfunk , was broadcast for the first time at the turn of the year 2007/2008. In addition to such literary adaptations, the radio play and media art department of the BR has made a name for itself since the 1990s with original radio plays by Andreas Ammer , Ulrich Bassenge , Hartmut Geerken , Thomas Meinecke , and Wolfgang Müller . Numerous radio play productions of the BR are offered in the radio play pool as podcasts and for download.

An annual highlight in the Bayern 2 program is the Radio Revue , in which every year between Christmas and Epiphany, various programs, mostly repetitions, are broadcast on a main topic as well as radio plays and features.
