MDR Klassik is the sixth radio program of the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR). The station started operations on May 6, 2002. The channel broadcasts a modern target group program with which the possibilities of digital transmission should first be tested. The broad musical spectrum ranges from traditionally classical to contemporary to film music and pieces of light music adapted to classical music.

The program currently consists of several moderated programs, including a live program from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. In addition to a few in-house productions, the program also includes takeovers of other MDR and ARD programs. In May 2012, the program was expanded to mark its tenth anniversary with new series such as “Das Konzert” and “Das Werk”.

Since January 2017, the MDR has been bundling its classic music activities in radio, online and social media under the MDR Klassik brand. The new brand also includes the music ensembles (sound bodies) MDR symphony orchestra , MDR radio choir, MDR children's choir, the multi-month music festival MDR music summer and the music label MDR Klassik.
